City Of Sydney

We start our tour in the Historic North End – a look back in time from 1774 to modern day. From here we will explore some of various industries and vibrant communities that encompass the City of Sydney, population 24,000.

The City of Sydney was formed around the Steel Plant, which operated for over 100 years.  We will travel through time as we show you the former site, and take you through the residential area that was once the core of our thriving community.

We will also visit the First Nations reserve of Membertou.  One of five First Nations communities on the Island, you will see the progress made by the Chief and his community to become the fastest economically grown First Nations Community in Canada. (Rated ISO 9000).

Lighthouses

Let us take you to our amazing rugged coastline and show you some lighthouses.  First is the picturesque lighthouse in New Victoria.  This lighthouse is not accessible by vehicle.  We will view from a nearby beach, where you can stand on the rocky shore and capture the moment. 

 

Next travel to the fishing town of Louisbourg and see one of the most photographed lighthouses on the Island.  Our drive will take us through remarkable scenery and rural Cape Breton. 

 

Through the former coal mining towns, current fishing villages and past the only active coal mine via the Marconi Trail - named after Guglielmo Marconi who sent the first transatlantic radio signals from Glace Bay in 1901. 

Historic Louisburg

Step back into 1744 while French soldiers march down the streets of the town. Cannon fire shakes the ground and muskets can be heard firing from the Soldier's Guard House.  Baking bread aromas drifting from the stone bakery.  Chat with fishermen, sailors and servants. Sip rum and watch lace-making as children play 300-year-old games and stew simmers on an open-hearth fire. It’s so real, it seems surreal.

You may explore on your own, view daily demonstrations of music, dancing, cooking, military drills, and much more.

Visit the historic town of Louisbourg.  Settled in early 18th Century, Louisbourg was once the main settlement on Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island).  

The Sydney & Louisbourg Railway Museum is a great artifact of a former rail station that served the local area for passenger and cargo transport. 

The Louisbourg Lighthouse is our final stop.  This location will give you amble opportunity to take some amazing photos.  If you decide, you can also explore the Louisbourg trail along the shoreline.

Baddeck and Alexander Graham Bell

We will take the scenic drive to the beautiful town of Baddeck, home of the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site.

The Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site celebrates the genius of inventor Alexander Graham Bell. Exhibits show some of the greatest inventions in aviation and with the production of the world's fastest boat. The museum also includes exhibits regarding advanced recording technology. Alexander Graham Bell designed giant kites and, of course, invented the telephone.

The town of Baddeck is quaint; rich in beauty, history, and culture. The "Village" (as known in Cape Breton) will delight you with its unique character. Exquisite food can be found in the many restaurants offering everything from our world famous lobster to a steaming cup of seafood chowder or homemade baked goods. Enjoy a unique shopping experience while exploring our shops, boutiques, galleries, and much, much more.

We will take you to Eskasoni where you will be given a cultural tour of Eskasoni’s Goat Island by a member of the Mi’kmaq First Nations Community.

 

Eskasoni is the largest First Nations community in the world and is located 45 minutes from portside.  It is one of five First Nations communities on our island, known as Unama’ki. (To Say Thank you “Wela’lin” pronounced: Wa-law-lin).

Visit the Highland Village Museum where you will be thrust into Scottish culture and traditions.  Scenic tour of the area completes your day in the life of a Scot in Cape Breton. 

Step back in time! Journey to the late 1700s when the first Scottish settlers came to their new land "New Scotland" - Nova Scotia. Experience the Highland Village, where animators portray life of the Scots who settled here. The village is a true replica circa 1700 with a working Forge and historic Church. Lots to experience and plenty of picture opportunities.

Following along some of the same trails that our Scottish forefathers traveled as they settled in Nova Scotia. Cape Breton is embedded in rich Scottish history from the 1700's to present day, that you will see the Gaelic language in full use during our journey. Thereafter, we will travel to St. Ann's Bay and visit the only Gaelic College in North America before finishing our tour along the World Famous Cabot Trail.

Hiking The Highlands

Hug the world-famous Cabot Trail coastline you'll wind through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, where lush, forested river canyons carve into the ancient plateau, edged by rust-coloured cliffs.

Keep your eyes open for moose and bald eagles. You might even catch a Minke or Pilot whale breaking waves in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. 

We make our way directly from the Port of Sydney to the Skyline Trail - one of the most epic trails on Cape Breton Island.  This trail sees upwards of 1000 hikers everyday (per Parks Canada).

 

*Please note: The majority of this tour is spent driving to and from the trail head.  We do make periodical stops for photo opportunities and to stretch our legs.
